Chapter 7

“Shah Nawaz has declared that he wants to get officially engaged after he comes back from Lahore,” Tayi whispered, and Taya shifted uneasily.

“Hmm… we’ll see. First, let him get settled; then we’ll get him married too. Don’t worry,” Taya reassured her, so she kept smiling thoughtfully.

“Well, Mr. Zafar, don’t mind, but I think your late brother wronged his poor daughter by making that will. I don’t know why dead people leave the living feeling dead too.” She trailed off, lost in deep thought.

“What are you talking about, Noureen? My brother and his wife were helpless. They wanted to leave their daughter in safe hands. Their enemies would have hurt their daughter as well, and you know very well that we never moved from our home because this is the safest town, where nobody can follow us or Gulshan. That was the reason they made that will. Otherwise, what do the dead have to do with the living?” He patiently tried to explain it to his wife.

“I know… but for how long will we hide this reality from her? Gulshan’s behavior is getting worse day by day. She considers you her biggest enemy now, but you don’t even try to understand,” she said, shaking her head sadly as she placed the clothes in the wardrobe.

“I know… but I’m helpless. But it won’t be long now. Shah Nawaz himself will tell her the truth after their marriage. I trust his word,” he said firmly.

“I am begging you, please let me meet that girl before I die. I want to confess what I did to her, tell her the truth, and ask for her forgiveness. For God’s sake! Fulfill your dying mother’s last wish, Sheharyar.” She began to sob.

“Why don’t you try to understand? She is nowhere. I have searched every corner of this city. And how am I supposed to find her now, after all these years? God knows if she is even alive or not.” His tone carried its usual irritation.

“Look, Sheharyar, I’m not going to leave this world until I find her. I will fall at her feet and beg for her forgiveness in front of her family. They were kind people. They will forgive me.” She pleaded again, while he remained unable to see his mother in such a state.

Whatever was left of his inherited wealth, he had spent on his mother’s treatment, but her condition did not improve. Now, he had only a few assets of his own, and they were finally residing in Karachi, where his mother was spending the last few days of her life. But before she died, she wanted to unburden her heart and free herself from the weight of her guilt.

“Where shall I find her, Mom?” he asked helplessly, gazing at her pale face.

“Something in my heart tells me… she is here, somewhere in this city.” Deep in thought, Sheharyar placed his hand over her frail one.

**********

She was in the kitchen making tea. It was evening when she heard the telephone ringing, and her heart skipped a beat. Her heart fluttered at the thought that it might be Shah Nawaz calling. She turned off the stove and ran towards the phone.

“Hello, Assalamualaikum.” Her voice was trembling with emotion.

“Yes, Assalamualaikum. Am I speaking to Madam Gulshan Javed?” a male voice asked her.

“Yes, yes, I am. Who am I talking to?” She was startled and then asked cautiously.

“I am Ali Umar from the Pakistan Women Marathon Race Organization. Your registration has been confirmed. Please submit your form, and for detailed information about the training, come to our office next Monday. Thank you.”

“But… hello… hello, listen to me.” She looked at the phone in confusion.

“My registration… confirmation… What is going on? I haven’t booked any registration. It must be Rahila’s work,” she muttered to herself as she raced up the stairs to the rooftop.

“Rahila… Rahila…”

“What has happened? God forbid, what disaster has struck you? You’ll get a good beating from your uncle one day!” Rahila’s mother, Razia Khala, called out to her from the window.

“Oho, Khala! Please call Rahila. I have some very important news for her,” she said in frustration.

“Okay, okay, calm down. I’ll call her.” She went downstairs to call Rahila.

“How many times have I warned you not to shout for me from the rooftop? You can call me on the phone like a normal person, but no, you won’t understand.” Rahila hurried up to the rooftop.

“Goodness, don’t get angry at me! Just listen to me. What have you been up to? You didn’t even tell me! You registered me for the marathon, but where did the money come from? And my documents? Where did you get them? Tell me!” She stood with her hands on her waist, wanting to get to the bottom of the matter.

“Wait… wait… wait! What? I don’t know anything about any registration or documents! What are you talking about? Are you in your right mind?” They stared at each other in confusion, each looking at the other as if she were a madwoman.

“Huh? You don’t know? Stop acting like an actress in front of me!”

“Oh, Gulshan, believe me. Why would I do your registration, and that too without documents? Do you think I have a mountain of gold that I could do this?” Rahila was trying to make her understand, while Gulshan was looking at her like a fool.

“Then… then who did my registration?” She then told Rahila everything, which surprised her as well.

“Huh, so mysterious. Just who can do your registration, and that too without your original documents? Anyway, I am telling you, Gulshan, this is a golden chance for you. Forget about everything else and just go there to their office.”

“Are you in your right mind? I don’t even know who they are. What if someone is pranking me? Or what if it’s a fraud? Oh God, Rahila, what should I do?” She put her head in her hands, frustrated by the mystery.

“Everything will be okay, Gulshan. Don’t worry. I think you should talk to Shah Nawaz about this. Tell him that someone registered you without your knowledge. He will help you and get information about the person who did this. Just talk to him nicely.” Rahila’s advice was good. She really should talk to Shah Nawaz.

“Yes, this is a good idea. I’ll call him right now. Tayi has gone to the market. You, come with me.” She held Rahila’s hand, and they both went downstairs. Gulshan called Shah Nawaz, and after a moment, the phone was picked up.

“Hello… Assalamualaikum.”

“Talk to him nicely,” Rahila muttered in her ear. Gulshan composed herself and then started talking.

“Sh… Shah Nawaz, how are you?” she asked, stuttering slightly.

“Yeah, I’m okay too. You weren’t busy, right? Oh, yeah, everything is okay at home too. Actually, I have to talk to you about something.” There was silence for a moment, as if he was waiting for her to make a confession or something.

“Yes, Gulshan? What is it? Is everything okay?” he asked.

“Actually, I received a call a moment ago from an unknown number. Tayi wasn’t home, so I received the call.” She gave him all the details and then sighed.

“I’m really worried. I don’t want to lose this golden chance, but I’m also afraid that it might be a fraud.” There was worry in her voice.

“Alright, don’t worry. I’ll get some information about what sort of organization this is. I’ll talk to you later. Allah Hafiz.” At his short reply, she helplessly put the phone down.

“What happened? What did he say?” Rahila asked, confused by her crestfallen expression.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to get anywhere with him,” she said through gritted teeth. Rahila rolled her eyes in exasperation.

“Gosh, I am so fed up with your hopelessness. You lose courage so easily. Listen to me.” Rahila held her by the arms and turned her toward herself.

“There is only one difference between those who see dreams and those who live their dreams. Those who only see dreams never have the courage to live for them. They lose hope at every point, and you are like that too. So, if you listen to me, it will only be for your own benefit.”

“Yes, you’re right, Rahila. Don’t worry about me. I’m just waiting for his call. I’ll see what he does.” A spark of hope ignited in her heart, making her forget, for the moment, about the person who had registered her for this marathon.
