Chapter Four

“Well, it’s not the time to speak about it, but I really don’t understand one point. You said your parents were pretty rich and that they have villas too, and that your uncle and aunt want to occupy your wealth. But you all are still living in this dirty neighborhood.” After a moment of silence, Rahila expressed her confusion.

“Yaar, that’s the whole point. They want to show the world that they have nothing. If they started openly spending my parents’ money, then I will be sure of their wrongdoings, and even the whole family will know that they are squandering my father’s money. That’s why they wanted me to marry their uneducated son so that they could get my wealth.” She left the food as such, and once again she got furious with them.

“And what’s the guarantee that all your suspicions are correct?” Rahila asked with a serious expression, and Gulshan looked at her with a questioning gaze.

“Gulshan, don’t be distrustful of your blood relations. You know the biggest problems with blood relations are that they never show their genuine feelings easily, and that’s why we get many misunderstandings about them. Many times reality is not what it seems to us.” Rahila got up, and with a tray in her hands, went out of the room. Behind her, Gulshan, sitting on her knees, went into deep thought.

**********

“Oho… get up now, the maids at your Taya’s (Uncle’s) palace have gone on leave so you have to do all the work today.” Tayi was busy taunting her.

“And what had your Taya said that upset you? He was right, you know who let their young girls participate in a marathon.?” Tayi was dusting the curtains and made an excuse.

“For God’s sake, leave me alone. I am already suffering from the worst headache. You don’t need to get on my nerves. Leave and sit on a prayer mat and pray that I die so you all get rid of me,” she shouted at her Tayi.

“Oh, my… we have shot ourselves in the foot by taking you into our protection. Why would I pray for your death? If you want to die, then die, hmph.” Tayi went out of the room in anger, and Gulshan wrapped the dupatta around her head and lay down to sleep again.

**********

“Abu (Father) I think you should tell the truth to Gulshan, otherwise she’ll get farther away from us.” Shah Nawaz mustered up his courage and told his thoughts at dinner to his father. Because Gulshan hasn’t come out of her room in two days, and he knows she was crying at her helplessness.

“He is right; she doesn’t talk to us properly. She even eats from Rahila’s hands. What should we do? Our own good deed of protecting her has made us criminals in the eyes of insiders and outsiders.” Tayi also suffered from Gulshan’s behavior.

“Nothing will happen, and she is young. She’ll understand when the time comes, and she won’t get farther from us. Gulshan is quite sensible.” Taya took a bite and spoke in Gulshan’s favor. If only he would say these things in front of Gulshan.

“Goodness, you keep repeating this: just how much older she has to be to understand these things? What if she gets rebellious, then what will we answer to our family..” Tayi felt extreme frustration.

“Abu, you are right, but she is not understanding anything right now. And she is not wrong. To live with so many restrictions, it is difficult, and when she demands something, you make some new rules which make her think we hate her.” Shah Nawaz by any means wants to solve her confusion.

“Look, Shah Nawaz, I will have to face Bhai and Bhabi (brother and Sister in law) on the day of judgement. If I am stopping Gulshan or if I am restricting her, then it’s for her own good and it’s according to her parents’ will. At least you people should understand this and make her understand too.” Taya has finished his meal.

“Abu, I agree that we’ll be answerable to uncle and aunty, but how long are we going to keep the truth from her that her parents’ accident was actually a murder and now her life is in danger too. She won’t believe us ever if we won’t even tell her the reality of her situation.” Shah Nawaz emphasizes his last words.

“Not now, Shah Nawaz, not now. She is emotional. I am afraid she will take a drastic step if she gets to know this. What if she gets the idea to avenge her parents? After her Nikah with you later, you can tell her the truth.” He got up from the table. Tayi and Shani (Shah Nawaz) looked at each other helplessly.

**********

“What do you think about Shani? How do you feel about him?” After many days, she looked radiant to Rahila. Her mood was a little better now than before, so Rahila started this conversation with her.

“How will I feel about him? He is more bitter than poison, and he is stupid. Rahila, we are not a good pair. This match is only a deal that my Taya and Tayi want. They want to seize my parents’ wealth; that’s their only mission.” She snapped angrily.

“Oh, for God’s sake. I only asked you about him in passing, and you have ruined your mood over it,” Rahila felt exasperated.

“Look, Rahila, I am clear on this: I don’t have any sort of relationship with that stupid nor do I want to make one with him. Only Taya and Tayi want to please themselves. That’s why they talk about this relationship, and I don’t think that he is interested in me either. He’s said it to me many times.” She shrugged and said arrogantly. Rahila thought for some time and then yelled

“Whoa, I have got a bombastic idea. I’ll tell you if you are going to do it, otherwise I won’t waste my precious words on you.” Rahila chirped excitedly, which aroused Gulshan’s curiosity.

“Tell me, you idiot, I’ll do it if I think it’s something a human should do.” Gulshan pleaded.

“Okay, listen.” Rahila held her arm and said in a mysterious tone. “Get a grip on Shani, then it will be easy to get all your work done through him.” Rahila had barely finished speaking when Gulshan’s eyes widened in surprise, and then her eyes reddened from anger. Rahila swallowed.

“Loo.. Look you know what I mean… I am just saying you just show him that you fell for him, and these boys, they are already crazy about girls, you just have to say the word, and he’ll take care of everything. You can change your life by using him, Gulshan. Use your brain, my dear, and if you are done with him, then you can leave him. You can find a thousand like him. Rahila had hit a bullseye with this one. Gulshan was now pleasantly considering the idea. Rahila looks at her as if wanting Gulshan to praise her. Suddenly Gulshan put her arms around her and said in an excited voice.

“Break the shackles on your feet.” And then they laughed with all their heart.
