Chapter 6 A glimmer of hope
“Rahila….. Rahila.” She called for Rahila from the rooftop, and Rahila came running to the rooftop.
“What happened? Why are you shouting at the top of your lungs? What tornado has come to get you?” She jumped onto the wall, dusting the dust from her clothes.
“Oh, I was missing you, sister dearest,” Gulshan said in a cheerful voice. Rahila raised her eyebrow and looked at her with suspicion.
“God have mercy on me. What’s with all this love? Anyway, tell me what happened. Are you making the sequel to Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham (Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Grief)?”
“Oh man, I was thinking yesterday that I just left you hanging, so I was feeling bad. I was just feeling emotional. But today, I have thought about every word of yours, so I realized you were right. I have to get myself out of this swamp, and I have to take risks…every kind of risk. So, I am ready for it.” Gulshan smiled at her.
“Wow, every time you lock yourself in a room, your wisdom increases a bit. Do you do some magic there or what?” Rahila muttered in fake surprise, and Gulshan giggled.
“Alright, tell me, how do I make him fall in love with me?” Gulshan was talking while someone was listening to their conversation from the doorway.
“Look, he is leaving today. Go to him and make him feel that you love him. Make him fall for you so that even when he leaves, his mind will be filled with thoughts of you. And when he leaves from here, you should call him again and again to ask about his whereabouts. Then his attention will be drawn towards you. This is the best time because separation is far more powerful than union when it comes to love.”
Rahila, like an expert in love, was telling her the rules of love, and Gulshan, like a genius student, was nodding and listening to every word.
The person standing at the door felt his heart slip. He took a moment to understand their plan. The way she had been talking so sweetly to him and how he had been lost in those moments. How had she become so soft with him? She wasn’t this soft-spoken before, so how was she behaving so lovingly toward him?
So this was Gulshan Javed’s plan…the last way to get rid of this house and the people in it.
His eyes welled up with tears. How happy he had been to see the change in her. He had felt at peace, thinking that when he came back from Lahore, he would confess his love for her. He had thought about so many things, not knowing that he was only a part of her drama, her act, the kind of act in which he would only lose and Gulshan would win. He wanted to scream so badly, but he composed himself and slowly descended the stairs.
“If she wants to win using this act, then I accept losing just for her.” He descended the last stair and disappeared from view.

“Take good care of yourself and come home victorious. And eat on time, Shani.” It was time for his departure, and the whole house was sad. Tayi was also upset and kept advising him again and again to take care of himself.
“Oho, Ami, what’s happening? It’s not like I’m going abroad. Lahore isn’t that far away. I’ll be back in a week or two, so don’t worry.” He was also quite anxious. He couldn’t bear to see the tears in his mother’s eyes.
Gulshan was standing in the kitchen, drinking glass after glass of water. Her heart was uneasy, and she had a strange feeling that something was wrong. For a moment, she thought she should stop Shah Nawaz.
Since morning, for some odd reason, she couldn’t bring herself to face him, even though Rahila had strictly emphasized that she should meet him before his departure. But whenever she saw him in front of his room, he looked confused, and now that he was ready to leave, she couldn’t muster up the courage to even say Khuda Hafiz to him.
She composed herself with much difficulty and then came out of the kitchen. In her hands were a bottle of cold water and a hot pot, which she handed to him with trembling hands. Shah Nawaz took them from her with an expressionless face, without meeting her eyes.
“Abu, we’re getting late,” he said expressionlessly and moved toward Taya Jaan, who was waiting for him at the door. Tayi’s eyes reddened further, and Gulshan felt her heart drop. He was going this far from home for the first time, and whatever happened, he was still her cousin, a part of this small family.
She tried to comfort herself. When Shah Nawaz went outside, he looked back one last time. He saw Gulshan standing behind Tayi, her face pale with anxiety.
Someone should learn to act from her. Then he smiled, and for the first time that day, she looked directly at him and smiled back with tears in her eyes. He nodded, said goodbye, and set off. Tayi and Gulshan stood there for a long time.

“Oh, he must be sad. That’s why his eyes carried that restlessness. Why are you even overthinking? Just start preparing to move out of here. Pack your bags and dream big.” Rahila smiled and calmed her.
“Dude! I don’t know why, despite not wanting to, I keep feeling bad for Shani. I never wanted to deceive anybody. Ever. If circumstances hadn’t compelled me, I would never have taken this step. What should I do? My conscience is condemning me, as if I have committed a grave sin.”
“Oh, for God’s sake, Gulshan, what’s wrong with you? Everything will be alright. Look, I feel like if you keep dwelling on things, you will never be able to achieve your dreams. And if you are really feeling bad about him, then do one thing: just start behaving better with your aunt and uncle. There is nothing wrong with that, especially since you will be leaving this place soon. Maybe you’ll feel better, and your guilt will finally ease.”
Rahila gave her new hope. She was like her guardian angel, always protecting her. Gulshan smiled through her tears, making sure that she understood everything Rahila had told her.
