Midnight Touch/Horror story/written by Jiya/short story/English horror stories/horror series

It was midnight, and Jake still hadn’t gone home. Lately, every time he returned, he sensed a presence someone watching him. At first, he brushed it off as overthinking, but soon, he began to feel something far worse an illusory touch brushing against his skin. Each time, it left him shuddering with cold dread.

Convinced he was losing his mind, Jake even went to a psychiatrist, fearing schizophrenia. But no diagnosis came, and no answers. The fear remained.

Now, Jake was too terrified to return home, so he decided to spend the night at his friend’s place. Yet even there, unease gnawed at him. Something unseen tugged at the edges of his mind, keeping him restless.

“For God’s sake, man cheer up there is no one following you I am sure it’s just in your mind.” Leonard tried to console him but it came out harsh.

“I know you don’t trust me, but can you not be so conceited?” Jake yelled.

“What the hell, bro? Here I am trying to help you… Okay, let’s just forget about this whole fiasco why don’t we go somewhere for fun?” Leonard’s voice softened at Jack’s horror-stricken face.

“Somewhere fun like where?” Jake sighs halfheartedly.

“Umm, where people are not scared. Look, dude living alone is not good for your fear you should be in the company of many people where you feel the vibrancy of life and maybe then you will forget this fear of yours…… Hey hey, I am not trying to undermine your fear but..” Leonard holds his hand up by the pitiful look on Jake’s face.

“Fine.” Jake almost spat this word but…. “Where do you think we should go I don’t like clubbing, too much noise and everyone trying to cozy up to you for no good reason.” Leonard rolls his eyes “When did I say we will go clubbing may be we can go hiking. Why because there are many people there?” Jake frowned “You say there are more people…….” He stopped looking at the shine in Leonard’s eyes.

“Well, you are inquiring which means you are ready for a trip.”

“Whatever.” Jake can only say this because he was also tired from the constant fear engulfing him.

The next day at noon when Jake was at gym because he couldn’t go home it has been one week and he hasn’t been home since then so he would either be at Leonard’s house or gym he wasn’t going to work either because he didn’t want an episode of intense fear to hit him at the office where everyone thinks of him as a crazy and insane monster.

So, he seeks refuge in the gym and at Leonard’s house. His next appointment with the psychiatrist is in 7 days so before that he wants to try to be normal.

“There you are. I have been looking for you.” Jake put down the dumbbell and cleaned his sweat on the towel nearby. He looked at Leonard who was in high spirits.

“Something good happened I guess otherwise why would you be so happy?” Leonard looked a bit different from Jake. His heart skipped a beat for a moment due to unknown uneasiness.

Leanorad was looking intently at him and then he smiled a very chilling smile. “Oh it’s nothing, didn’t I say we will go for a trip I have talked to some of my friends they are going to ……” He stopped abruptly then he smiled “Oh I forgot where they are going but you are coming home with me today aren’t you?”His phrasing scared Jake a bit because Leonard was acting completely different. His fear came at full force but he composed himself and tried to force a smile.

“Of course, I’ll be coming you are asking as if I am not staying with you for the last seven days. You know I can’t go to my own house.” He gulped because Leonard was still looking at him.

“Oh, it’s done then I’ll be waiting for you I’ll prepare a scrumptious meal for you because you have lost weight with that.” Leonard turned and went out of the gym. Jake felt his life slipping away.

“What was that? What happened to Leonard? Why was he acting so differently? Should I go or not….?” He was in a dilemma so before he went to Leonard’s house. He went to the nearby cafe, where everyone knows him there but today he feels like his last solace his friend has also become his walking fear.

To calm himself, he ordered a coffee, picked up a book from the small library at the back of the cafe, and sat at the table near the tree, as it was an open-space cafe. When the clock struck twelve, his heart began to pound wildly. He didn’t know why, but an inexplicable urge told him to check on his friend. With trembling hands and a thumping chest, he put the book in its place and came out of the cafe.

Jake wandered for 10 more minutes before entering Leonard’s home. It was so silent that his anxiety peaked. It was like his heart would come out of the ribcage. Slowly he entered the hallway nothing but dead silence. With growing fear and anxiety he turned and moved the knob of Leonard’s bedroom and the sight froze him in place. His friend lay motionless on the bed, his body drenched in blood. Crimson pooled beneath him, and on the wall above, scrawled in that same blood, were chilling words: “Running from me, in your dreams.

Jake staggered back, his breath caught in his throat. Panic consumed him.Jake was so panic-stricken that he didn’t look at Leonard again. he started trembling and then suddenly as if his mind had started working he turned and bolted, not even knowing where his feet were carrying him. He ran and ran, until he slammed into someone in the darkness.

“Are you okay?” a hollow voice rasped.Jake’s heart stopped. The voice didn’t seem human his head started spinning he couldn’t see the person the voice belonged to.Before he could scream, everything went black as a massive shadow rose and engulfed him whole.

The End….
