Chapter Three
“Maheen Beta, if you are ready, shall we go? I’ll drop you off at your university while I head on to work.” Her father was ready, and he always made sure that Maheen wouldn’t have to ride overloaded buses to her university, but she always refused.
“Baba, you go. My first lecture was canceled, so I’ll leave later. Don’t worry and go safely.” After the incident with Zaman Sheikh, she became cautious. She couldn’t let anything happen in front of her father, who supported her education despite family objections, so Maheen made an excuse.
“Okay, Beta, then I’ll go. Travel carefully.” He stepped out of the door while saying goodbye to everyone.
“Ammi, please give me a cup of tea so that I can also leave for university.” She called for her mother after two minutes. She was already ready; she was just making excuses.
“You just refused to go with your father because your lecture got cancelled, and now, after two minutes, you are in a hurry to leave…” Her mother gave her a look while she played with her phone to think of an excuse.
“Yes, Ammi, I refused, but I just saw a message that another teacher’s lecture would be held. I really can’t miss it now can I?” She was faking a text glancing at her mother then pretending to be busy on her phone.
“Alright…” Her mother only said this and gave her a cup of tea.
“Yes, Ammi, I am leaving before I get late. Allah Hafiz…” She quickly drank some tea, grabbed her bag and left.

“Oh, how crowded it is today. I don’t think I’ll get a seat on the bus…” She looked at the bus stop from afar while muttering to herself. Suddenly, a vegetable bag dropped from an elderly man’s hand. Since there were not many vehicles on the road, she ran towards him.
“Let me help you…” People stood around like insensitive spectators instead of helping the old man. This sort of behavior in society had always hurt her. It was as if humanity was mourning its own death. She gave the bag to the man. Started picking up the vegetables from the road.
When she had picked up all the vegetables and was going to give them to him some people shouted at her. She looked at them.A car was moving towards her, and the person driving it was busy on his phone. She quickly pushed the old man aside. The driver had also seen them and slammed on the brakes. The car’s tires screeched loudly.
“Beep! Beep!” The person sitting in the car kept honking the horn and was saying something while pointing at her. Seeing this, her anger flared.
“Quickly, get down from the car. First, it was your fault, and now you are scolding me. You are not blind, so why this irresponsible behavior?” She moved towards the car in anger.
“Oh, madam, I am not blind. That’s why you are alive. Now leave. You are unscathed, and the proof is that tongue of yours.” He rolled down the window and said nonchalantly without looking at her. His whole focus was on the back seat.
“Give me the keys to your car and get lost. Your eyes should be on the road, not anywhere else while driving. Why don’t you watch the front?” She got irritated.
“Why should I give you the car keys? Did anything happen to you? Now excuse me, I have somewhere to be.” He also got furious.
“Because you are not capable of driving. I don’t know how you got your license. You people don’t even know the driving rules…” Maheen was in another mood. She had completely forgotten that she was getting late.
“Well, you are also not capable of walking on this road.” He retorted.
“Give me your keys and walk on your own feet today. Then you will understand.” She had merely given him advice.
“Why should I give them to you? You don’t look poor. Get out of the way.” This time, he really looked at her. Maheen was completely covered in a black shawl. Her wheatish skin tone and mesmerizing eyes stood out, and the black shawl made her look even more beautiful. He pushed the thought away.
“You seem poor because you have four eyes and still can’t see.” She taunted him about his sunglasses.
“You seem to be really free. Now get out of the way. I want to reach somewhere quickly.” His gaze remained fixed on the back seat.
“I don’t want to get out of the way. What will you do?” She replied in the same tone.
“Come here. Take the car keys, and you take care of the man who is unconscious in the back seat. I am going.” He took her near the car, showed her the back seat, and handed her the car keys.
“W-What happened to him?” She instantly grew worried.
“He fainted, and I am taking him to the hospital. And you, strange woman, wouldn’t get out of the way.” Now he was blaming her.
“I-I am sorry.” She stepped aside, and he had already gotten into his car. He drove away at speed. She looked at the car for quite some time. Suddenly, the bus horn startled her. She Got on the bus. When she looked at her watch she realized she had wasted a lot of time.
“He made me late. Stupid man.” She thought to herself and gave him that title.
**********
“Oh, come on, gentleman. I was waiting for you… you’ve come late.” He knew someone was waiting for him.
“Now you start scolding me. I am already quite angry, and my temper is very short.” He even got angry at the man’s simple tone.
“Well, when was your temper ever not short? Have you ever seen a calm moment like that?” The man was watching his expression, but that was the only way to lighten his mood.
“Have you forgotten that this so-called rotten and short-tempered mind strategizes all your moves and gets your work done? If you say, I can throw it away…then you will finally get the chance to use your brilliant mind. I mean, your so-called brilliant mind is only a burden if you keep it as a crown on your head but never use it. Freedom is also your right.”Now he was joking, which meant the man had successfully managed to lift his mood.
