Chapter Seven
“I’m leaving home. You should be there before me so that nobody dares to stop me from entering. I won’t spare you if I’m embarrassed in front of everyone…” He himself wasn’t ready yet, but he still texted Arham to take care of everything.
“Bravo! I’m the one handling your affairs, and I should be accused too? You’ve been sitting at home, chilling, while I kept running back and forth, and this is the recompense…” Haroon grabbed his clothes and was about to head to the washroom when his phone rang. He picked up the call quickly, but before he could say anything, Arham answered the text he had sent.
“Why do I feel like you’re speaking in someone else’s tongue today? And didn’t he tell you to greet…say Salam first and then talk?” He remembered his insult.
“Yes! He told me. He told me to be more careful when it comes to Haroon. If he picks up the call, he should say Salam first,” Arham spoke bluntly.
“Just me? But why?” he asked, amazed.
“Because you have no habit of saying Salam at all,” he said openly.
“You talk too much. I’ll deal with you later. For now, drop the call. I’m getting late because of you,” Haroon blamed him.
“Getting late because of me? But I can’t hear the sound of any vehicle…” Arham taunted.
“Yeah! I parked the car aside to talk.” It was an excuse.
“Oh! Aside or inside your house’s garage?” Arham knew Haroon was no good at this sort of thing.
“You’re trying to be too clever. Are you keeping an eye on me?” he asked, anger creeping into his voice.
“No, I have sources,” Arham said and dropped the call instantly because Haroon could have started a whole new conversation.
“Idiot!” Haroon threw his mobile onto the bed after hearing the call disconnect and started getting ready. He had no idea what trial awaited him…
**********
Mr. Jalal found Haroon on a footpath, unconscious. His miserable condition made it obvious that he had been tortured. He took him to a nearby hospital for first aid. After regaining consciousness, Haroon told him that he was from a very decent family, but a few people had barged into their house, tortured him and his parents, and killed them right in front of his eyes.
“They might think I’m dead and throw me there.” Mr. Jalal asked Haroon for his home address, but he couldn’t remember the full address. However, he gave him his father’s number and the name of the area. But, all praise be to Allah, Mr. Jalal managed to figure it out with the information Haroon had given him.
He witnessed the last burial of his parents. Haroon was the only heir to millions in wealth and all the family property, but he was unaware of it. Mr. Jalal knew exactly how our society treats such children. Therefore, he adopted him, opened a bank account in his name, and kept every penny he was trusted with there.
He had no children of his own. Instead of celebrating the happiness of his firstborn, he buried two souls and never married again. All the love he had kept hidden for his child was now poured out on Haroon. Despite being an orphan, Haroon was raised in very kind and loving hands.
And about Ahmar, he joined the police at a very young age. Mr. Jalal knew that young blood could do the best and could destroy everything over a single doubt in the heart. So, he made sure to bring out the best in Ahmar’s character.
**********
“Assalam u Alaikum.” When Haroon reached the university, he found Ahmar waiting for him in the parking area. Two other people were with him, perhaps familiar faces from the university.
Before Haroon could say anything about his entry, Ahmar said Salam to him. He didn’t want to destroy the personality he had created for Haroon here.
“Wa Alaikum Salam. How are you, Ahmar?” Haroon smiled brightly and answered him after returning his Salam. After shaking hands with Ahmar, Haroon’s focus shifted to the two men. He cleared his throat to get Ahmar’s attention. His intention was for Ahmar to introduce them.
“Sorry. I’ll introduce you. He is Basit Sahab, and this is Sajjad Sahab. They both helped me get you admission to the university. Well, usually he is not that good, but he only needs an opportunity to make me feel bad in front of other people.” Ahmar thought the last words to himself. He didn’t say them out loud.
Haroon greeted both of them with so much cheerfulness that Ahmar wanted to make a video of the scene and send it to his boss.
“We are very pleased that among our people, there is such a talented and hardworking man. Let’s go. Let us give you a tour of the university.” Both men let Haroon come with them. Suddenly, Haroon remembered something. He searched his pockets but couldn’t find his phone.
“Ahmar, man, take these keys. I think I forgot my phone in the car.” Haroon excused himself and moved toward Ahmar. He winked at him, handed him the car keys, and then turned back. Ahmar gritted his teeth and helplessly went toward the car.
“Where is it? What if he was lying just to get me out of there?” he muttered while searching for the phone. When he couldn’t find it, he called the number.
“Arham calling.” He heard the ringtone and started searching for the phone. It was lying underneath the seat. He got angry when he saw the wrong name on the screen, angrily picked up the phone, and headed toward Haroon. Thank God, Haroon was alone.
“You haven’t corrected my name yet. So many years have passed, and you still haven’t corrected my name. You should have edited it by now.” Ahmar remembered when he had first met Haroon. They had exchanged numbers, and Haroon had asked for his name in a very casual manner. He had said “Ahmar,” but Haroon had heard “Arham” and saved his number by that name. Ahmar later found out about it and told him to change it, but Haroon had forgotten.
“Oh, it doesn’t make a difference. You do know you’re the only piece in my life with this name,” Haroon joked with him.
“Wait a minute. Why wouldn’t it make a difference? You’re also the most thick-skinned person in my life.” Ahmar changed his name to that and saved it, then showed it to Haroon. Haroon’s own joke had turned against him.
“You…” Before Haroon could say anything more, the two men came toward them.
Haroon grew frustrated. He didn’t know what he was going to face here. Would he have to fight, or would he meet more people? That would be decided only by time.
