Part Two
The Doctors diagnosed Seraphina with cancer, and though she still had hope of recovering, her heart had gone cold. She rarely speaks, even with Kylie and Alex visiting her almost every day.
She would spend half of her time in Aaron’s room, and although Alex tried, he didn’t want to disturb her alone time with the memories of her son. The weight of her grief was visible.
She would pass the hours looking at the sketchbook, imagining what Aaron’s expressions must have been when he drew each sketch. She started writing letters to Aaron, though she knew no response would come to her letters, but it was her only solace.
It was her 46th birthday today, and though she had visited her doctor in the morning, she had difficulty breathing. Her body was screaming at her to do something, but she couldn’t get up.
Sera tried to get up, but today the longing for her son had reached another level. Tears fell from her eyes, leaving her gasping for breath. With difficulty she got up and reached the door, but her stamina gave out after just this single step.
“Mom…. Mom,” Sera felt like Aaron was calling her. She gathered her courage and, following the voice, she felt as if it was coming from Aaron’s room. Sera opened the door to Aaron’s room, but no one was there.
Suddenly she had the urge to write a letter. Sera knew it would be her last letter. With heavy steps she sat on the chair and opened the notebook which contained her previous letters. She opened the sketchbook because Sera loved looking at it when she was writing. It was like talking to her, Chiko.
My dear Chiko!
It’s been a year since you have been gone, and I have yet to process this loss. My inside is screaming and nobody can hear it. It’s my birthday, but all I remember is your body in blood. How should one recover from the loss of the very piece of their heart?
You were only sixteen, baby, and then you had to go in that car accident. How do I forget the horror of seeing you in your own pool of blood? The light fading from your eyes and from my world.
I wish to meet you soon. When I am departing from this world, just come see me, okay? Can I hope for this much? I miss you so much
Your mom loves you.
The paper trembled, her tears falling on it, smudging the ink. The house was silent except for her slowly fading breath. On the wall was a photo of a smiling boy, with gleaming eyes and forever sixteen.
Sera tried to open her eyes to look at the words on the paper once again because these words were not new; she had written them again and again for the past year, hoping it might somehow reach her son.
The room seemed to grow colder, and the weight in her chest had shifted; she felt lighter.
“Chiko…” she whispered. Her vision blurred and her breathing ceased to exist.
“Come with me, Mom… I am here.” She reached for the extended hand of the boy, and after a long time, a smile bloomed on her lips.
The ink remained dark, but the hand that had written the letter was gone, and the letter on the table waited for no one.
**********
A week passed since Sera’s passing; everything was getting normal when Alex and Kylie each received a parcel. It was evening, so they were at home. When Kylie unsealed her parcel, the sender’s name surprised her, making her eyes sting. The gift was from Sera; it had her favourite yellow summer dress, which she wanted to buy with Seraphina, though Kylie was not vocal about it,sera has noticed it. A letter was beside it.
Hey K!
If you are reading this letter, it means I am no longer with you. I have been wanting to tell you this for a while, but I kept putting it off when I saw you struggling not to leave me alone. You know, in this life, I am most indebted to you.
You were with me from the beginning when my life was in turmoil because of the divorce, and then after every struggle, we would both sit and reminisce about it, but this time I have lost a piece of my heart.
Though I am trying, I can’t move on. I just want to meet my child. Kylie, I just wanted you to know that I appreciated everything you did for me.
Love you always
Sera
A lump formed in her throat, but she tried not to cry; beside her was Alex with reddened eyes. He was looking at a photo of Aaron and himself, and a box opened with an exotic wristwatch. Alex opened his letter with trembling hands
My Dear Alex
Thank you for being a part of our family and for the happy memories. Watching you grow up beside Aaron has been such a joy. The way you look out for me and Aaron, I am grateful. My wish for you is to grow stronger and to be happy in this life.
With love
Aunt Sera
“At least she will be at peace now. We should be happy for her.” Kylie hugged Alex, her eyes moist but a smile on her lips.
Some people give us the most brilliant memories, so when they leave us, they leave the deepest wound, but the least we should do for them is to be happy. At least they were once part of our lives.
The End…..
