Part One
“Please, ma’am, cooperate with us, we can still save you but if you won’t cooperate, then we won’t be able to save your life.” a lump form in Seraphina’s throat she only nodded and with much difficulty she came out of the hospital.
Today was her 46th birthday, and one year ago on her 45th birthday her only son, Aaron, had a road accident. She still remembers that day; it haunts her even now.
A car honk jerk her off her memories. She clutched her bag and sighed, a memory from the past flashing through her mind
“Mom, I’ll be late today; I’ll be working with Alex on our group assignment. Don’t wait for me today, okay?” Aaron informed his mother while tying his shoes.
“Okay, but you will eat on time, otherwise I’ll worry.” She hugged him. Aaron kissed his mother’s cheeks and smiled.
“Yes,Mom. Don’t worry,” he took his bag and went outside the house when his phone went off.
“Hey man, where are you? I am in the cafe waiting for you.” Alex’s loud voice rang in his ears.
“Why are you not in college? I told you Mom would be busy up to five o’clock. We just have to wait until then, Alex. I’m on my way now. I just came out of the house.” The summer breeze put a spring in Aaron’s steps and he started walking fast.
“C’mon, it’s Aunty Sera’s birthday. We have to plan a surprise for her.” Alex’s enthusiasm makes Aaron smile.
“Well, yes, but we have the entire day to plan for it.” He was cut off before he could say more.
“Alright, but hurry, I haven’t prepared my gift yet.” Aaron hung up the phone, a smile bloomed on his lips thinking about the upcoming surprise for his mother’s birthday.

Seraphina, the name fits her. She has fiery red hair, and she’s a beautiful woman, but life was hard on her. Just after three years of marriage, her husband walked away from this relationship and thought unwilling to part ways.
Seraphina recognizes her powerlessness, as her husband’s extensive business network prevents her from affecting the situation. Also, she has to take care of her son, who was only two years old when the divorce happened.
Aaron became the center of her attention. Her parents were extremely supportive of her. They didn’t want to part with their grandchild,Hence Seraphina started living with them. She was a librarian at the local library, and her shift would end at five, so parents would take care of Aaron.
Life was moving fast and with passing years her parents one after another left her side which devastated her because they were a huge support to Seraphina but she couldn’t do anything about it so she swallow this bitter pill fate throw at her and now her son at sixteen was supporting her mother as much as he could.
“Happy birthday,Sera, you look as lovely as you were in your thirties.” Her friend Kylie wished her.
“Thanks, K, for flattering me.” Seraphina was much too long for Kylie, so she would call her Sera.
“I was telling the truth, you know. Anyway, what did Chiko give you?” Chiko was Aaron’s nickname, though it doesn’t match his persona.
“Oh well, he and Alex were planning something they didn’t want me to know, so I don’t want to spoil their surprise,” Sera smiled fondly.
“Ahh kids, only if they knew how much we mothers know.” Kylie sighed, “My Alex sure has a brain. I am telling you, they must have prepared something back in the house,” then she glanced at the clock.”It’s about time anyway, your shift will end in about ten minutes, by the way, leave some cake for me.” She winked at Seraphina.
“Ah, sure, I will do that.” Sera looked at the clock again, hoping the time would pass soon. She couldn’t wait to see what her son had been planning for her.

Before she could reach the house, her phone rang, and the surprise that reached her crumbled her entire world. Alex was saying something on the phone, but her mind only registered two words: Aaron and accident. In a moment, Kylie was beside her.
Whatever happened after that was completely hazy in Sera’s mind: how Kylie drove and they reached the hospital, and then the devastating news of Aaron’s death. She has become completely numb to everything.
For three months, Sera wasn’t even aware of her surroundings. Kylie, with her son Alex, didn’t leave her for a moment in these three months and one day when she was sitting in Aaron’s room, Alex came to her.
“Aunt Sera …” his eyes tear up when he sees Aaron’s picture on the wall “well this is for you it was a gift from Aaron.” His voice cracked at the end he left the gift box on the bed beside Sera and left the room.
Seraphina mechanically opened the box, and her heart clenched in her chest; it was a sketchbook. Aaron had sketched her smiling look, and when she was driving, laughing at something Aaron said, cooking in the kitchen. At the last page was a note written in Aaron’s handwriting.
“I love you, Mom. You are the best mother in the world.”
Sera’s tears started falling, and then she was sobbing. Alex, who was standing beside the door, started crying too. The loss was big, and though he tried to be there for Aunt Sera, he knew his presence could not fill Aaron’s absence.
Both Kylie and Alex would come daily and spend some time with Sera, but they both knew her health was deteriorating, she was losing weight and the conviction to live.
And when Kylie thought Sera was getting back to normal and was going back to work, the unexpected happened. She had just reached home when her phone rang.
“Hello Kylie, can you come to the hospital?” It was Eva Sera’s neighbour.
“Hospital is Sera okay..” Without disconnecting the call, she ran outside.
“No, she is not. It’s serious. Hurry, I am waiting for you.” Eva cut the call.
With a worried mind and thousands of thoughts in her head, Kylie drove towards the hospital in a rush.
