Description

WITNESS is the very first crime mystery novel written by Anoosha Aarzoo. A story she tried hard to write and give justice to it.
WITNESS was first written in Urdu, and the author expanded the story for the English version. The story revolves around a crime committed years ago, and somehow God send a witness who sees the real event’s backstory in her dream.
WITNESS is a story of a killer’s mind who thinks sinning is not wrong. In fact, there was no evidence, no witnesses, and therefore the killer thought he would roam free for the rest of his life.
WITNESS is a story of a gripping crime thriller about justice, secrets, and a killer who thought he got away. But nature said NO, and you will remember what I say to you (now), and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is seeing of (His) servants. (Al-Quran: Surah Ghafir Ayat 44)

Prologue

In the silence of the night, the sound of someone hitting the earth with a shovel could be heard, breaking the silence for a moment. The sound was chilling in the darkness of the night.

The trees surrounding the area were witnessing something horrible, so their leaves began to fall. The coming breeze carried them to the ground, making the space around them tremble slightly.

This place was far from the city, filled with silence and darkness, and it was now a witness to someone’s cries and grief. The person’s cries had now turned into helpless hiccups. They were dying with every passing moment, their life slowly fading from their body in slow, agonizing steps. The tears had stopped. The essence was leaving their body.

Another person stood beside them, witnessing this fading of life, yet they did not try to help. They silently watched as life slowly left the dying person’s body. Maybe this was all the life that had been written for them.

And so, the surroundings, filled with silence, closed their eyes, knowing they would not hear those cries again.

“Oh, thank God there are no witnesses here. When there are no witnesses and no evidence, then who will be punished?” He laughed mockingly, not knowing that someone was listening to him and watching him so closely that his punishment had already been decided.

He was burying the body in the ground, which was now two feet deep, thinking that he was burying the evidence of his sins. But according to him, it wasn’t a sin; rather, it was freedom for the buried body.

He was busy with his work when, in the silence of the night, his foot stepped on something. A crunching sound came from beneath it, startling him a little. He looked left and right, then laughed loudly. There was no one there. His laughter made the fear shrouding the environment even more frightening because it didn’t sound human.

He had ripped apart a human being, and even in this situation, instead of feeling guilty, he was laughing as if, instead of a heart, his chest contained a stone. He shrugged and got busy with his work again.

To him, killing the person was a good thing because it had freed them from a life that would later become brutal. He thought he had freed them from this worldly punishment and horrible life.

And he believed that what he had done was not some evil act. There was no evidence, no witnesses, and therefore, he would roam free for the rest of his life. But how wrong he was. He would find that out very soon.

And you will remember what I say to you (now), and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is Seeing of (His) servants. (Surah Ghafir Ayat 44)

**********

She was lying in bed, rubbing her heels in distress in her sleep. She was wearing pink pajamas and a kurta, and she was thrashing like a fish that had been forcefully pulled out of the water.

Her eyes were tightly shut, and she was pushing her head from left to right as if trying to escape a horrible nightmare. The way her hands were clenched into fists was another indication that she was in the midst of a terrible nightmare.

Or maybe this time, it was a scene from the past…a scene that was real and had happened long ago. But time was adamant about revealing someone’s dreadful past, so a little reality had slipped into her dreams.

Her agitation could be seen from the sweat on her forehead. She was so helpless that even in her dream, she wanted someone to pull her out of this God-forsaken event. Her whole body was gripped by a blinding fear, and now it was shuddering as if it could no longer bear the torment of the dream. Slowly, her clenched fists unclenched, but the agitation on her face was still evident.

Suddenly, her eyes opened as if she were physically pained by her own situation. Her mouth tried to open to form a word, but the sound that came out was nothing more than gibberish. She tried again, forcing herself to break free from the effects of the nightmare, and her eyes widened.

“Guriya (Doll)…” She was trying to say this word, somehow connected to her dream. She was breathing rapidly, her eyes now devoid of any emotion. She ran out of her room as if she needed to breathe and pull herself out of the suffocating air. Maybe today was the day she would finally find out what happened that night.

She had been dreaming about the same night again and again, but each time, she saw a different part of it, like pieces of a puzzle. But what she had seen today was the last piece. The piece that completed the puzzle. And now, she wanted to reach the end of it.
