The Regret of Not Understanding

Darkness was falling as I sat on the staircase and reflected on my past. My work life was not going well; in fact, I received a warning that if I didn’t find any tender, they’d fire me.

I got married just a month ago and was struggling for every penny. I had to bear my wife’s expenses as well… My mind was buzzing with such thoughts when my wife called, “Hassan… Tea is ready” I heard her voice and moved to the room.

“You seem really worried; don’t worry, Dad said he will manage our rent expense this month.” Nimrah spoke considerately; but my mind was bursting with negative thoughts.

“Yes, of course he will… Because he has to hide his daughter’s misfortune from the world”

“Wh. What are you saying, Hassan?” Her voice broke.

I smashed the cup on the floor and stood up; Nimrah followed me.

“Ever since you entered my life, I’ve been struggling for each penny; you are a total jinx,” I barked at her.

She was shaking to her core.

She muttered something, trying to convince me, but I had grown so callous that I pushed her; she fell onto the bed.

“Get the hell out of here, and take your misfortune with you, you ill-fated woman” As I bellowed, she broke down in tears and say something, but I didn’t pay any heed.

“Get out” I roared again.

“Hassan, what are you saying? I am .. I am your wife,” she was terrified.

“Wife… My foot! I … you, I … you, I … you”

The crystal doll broke (I did not use the word “Divorce as it is the most disliked act by Allah SWT, May Allah Almighty lead those to the straight path who break this precious bond) Nimrah, facing the utter shock, sat on the floor.

I was furious enough to realise that I had not cared about her faithfulness towards me. She left, and while she was leaving her last sentence was “May you face the wrath of your own words” I couldn’t fathom the power of her curse, until my sister who had married the love of her life, came crying to me “Brother…” Sobbing badly, she placed her head on my chest.

Worried me, started thinking that my sister got married by her own choice, what happened now?

“Brother… Asfand divorced me… He left me…” she whimpered

I was heartbroken.

“Brother… He has left me all alone … He…He said… That I should take my misfortune and get out of his life…” She moved away and wiped her tears, then looked at me with bloodshot eyes.

“Brother.. You might never have thought that you could be the reason behind my broken marriage?”

This news startled me; “What did I do?”

“You divorced my sister-in-law uttering the same words like Asfand, don’t you feel guilty?” For a moment a dark silhouette crossed my face; my eyes witnessed an innocent, delicate face sobbing.

I had never thought that God would throw my sins in my face like this

And now I’m just guilty; I do not understand the karma of time.

I couldn’t fathom her love for me.

Regret eats away at me

For failing the test I was put through.

The End.
