“The Eye That Did Not Bow”
The eye that did not bow
And I regret it
The eye that did not bow
The eye that did not fear
The heart that did not melt
The breath that did not stop
The thought that was not positive
The self that was not good
I regret it
And this regret will never end.
Sitting on the staircase, his head covered under his hands, pondering on what had happened and that nothing would ever become normal in his life again. While he was drowning in such self-pity, his friend patted on his back and sat beside him.
“What’s up, bro? What made you sit like this?” He looked up with bloodshot eyes, and within a second, he leaned closer to his friend for a hug and broke down in uncontrollable tears. His friend was in utter shock at the event.” Wh.. why are you crying?? What happened? Is everything alright.. alright?” He could barely complete his sentence while he cradled his friend’s shoulders and moved him away.
“Come on, now will you tell me what’s bothering you this much??” The opponent was clearly not in a state to answer him, so he just looked up in his eyes with deep sorrow signaling great misery and dismay, he lost the words he couldn’t explain his pain to his friend so rather kept on crying miserably.
“I have made a grave mistake; I shouldn’t have done that… God will never forgive me…” He covered his face with his hands and was sobbing badly.
His friend, as if under the effect of a spell, could not decipher his friend’s behaviour.
“Why won’t he forgive you? What have you even done, man? Come on,” he said, looking around helplessly, Goodness, there was no one around them except for a few people who didn’t know them.
“She had warned me…she had told me it..it was a sin. But I didn’t listen to her… I forced her. I did her wrong. It was a sin for her to talk to a man out of wedlock…” His friend in the preceding manner looked at him with eyes frozen at him…
He could not fathom what he was declaring. If he had ever been involved in such stuff, he would have shared, and he, being a good friend, would have stopped him from doing anything like that. But more than him stopping him, it would have been his own instinct, his own moral values, that would warn him before he could take any step. But why was he even being so judgmental?.
“I had to know the reality. I can’t rely on assumptions…” his friend muttered …
“University had just begun. My feelings for her deepened. Once, she was walking beside me,when I held her hand, she panicked and brushed me away, and looked at me with fury in her eyes. I was smiling.. I thought I was in love with her and I wanted her contact number at any cost, but she resented it. I took it to my ego, traced her identity card and got her number. I used to text her, but she never replied.
Weeks passed, not a single reply from her.. and one day I intercepted her in an empty corridor.. I coerced her. She was terrified.. I kept bullying her. I had no bad intentions, just wanted to stay connected with her so I kept on threatening her that if she doesn’t reply to me anymore I shall destroy her..She begged helplessly that she couldn’t, as her family was very strict, if they got anything wrong about her they would kill her…it’s a sin she kept on arguing because she never wanted to be a sinner.
“This isn’t something a sane person should be doing.. leave all this, please..” she tried to stop me as well..
But I had already decided; I did not listen to a single word of hers.
The following day I texted her, and I got her reply instantly. She kept replying to me out of fear; I invited her for a meetup. She refused.
I forced her again; if she doesn’t see me outside, I shall disclose our relationship to her parents. I had screenshots of our chats..” His face was again behind his hands. His sobs getting louder, his eyes getting red from crying.
She felt scared because her family viewed what she considered a sin as a grave crime.
I paid no heed.
Stroking his chest as if there was difficulty in breathing. His breathing quickened. She… she… came to meet me… He started crying like a baby, so his friend hugged him.
And then we started meeting more often. She came making excuses in front of her family..
Then one day I received her message… His growling louder than before…as if he wanted to kill himself.”It was a screenshot of a letter..” His breaths getting heavier.
Speaking to a guy outside of marriage or any relationship, I view as an unforgivable sin. I had to do it, but I kept everyone at a distance. However, in the darkness of night, I chatted with him and met him outside. I can’t handle this anymore. I’m leaving.. I will never return… forgive me if you can… I should not name the person..
He must bear the burden of his sins..God will never forgive me and I will never forgive him..and his punishment is that he shall rot in regret..” His mouth filled with something hot ..it was blood …his friend terrified leaned towards him for help ..but he stopped him..his eyes now trying to find something in the sky..
“He will regret his whole life ..and his strong willpower won’t let him die either … I was weak.. I’m a looser..so I’m ending my life…” At the last sentence he wanted to dig his own grave.. He wanted to erase himself…but he did not want a death like that..as his sins were grave enough to face the lord of the heavens.
“Allah is merciful.. he will forgive you, what you did was wrong but you are guilty you are seeking his forgiveness he will forgive you… come on now lets go to the mosque lets pray lets ask for forgiveness we will find peace there… come..” His friend tried to console him..
“No..no he will never forgive me..” He was adamant.
“He will forgive you… Come on now,” his friend now held his shoulder tight.
“How will I face him?? I’m.. I’m sca..scared..my hear..heart aches…it feels as if my chest is gonna erupt ..I can’t…I musn’t..I don’t deserve it..” He kept repeating his heart throbbing faster than ever, his body burning hot as if it had caught fire..fire from the hell, he was guilty enough to realise the burning sensation was not normal
“What would hell’s fire feel like?” he caught himself questioning…
And covered his face with his hands; now he was shouting, “Oh lord save me from hellfire” His voice trembling, his body shaking, his friend frozen at the scene, and his eyes carrying sympathy for him.
Fire of guilt… his friend thought… only Allah’s mercy could make him at peace now.
The End..
