Chapter Six

“Hello!” He was playing a game, so with a glare he picked up the call and instead of saying Salam, he said hello.

“Young man! Seems like you forgot how to behave. You should say Salam, not hello like the British,” he said, trying to make sure he learns.

“Really? I said hello like the British, but you didn’t care to give Salam yourself.” His tone was taunting.

“Who picked up the call?” He questioned.

“I did.” He replied.

“Then don’t you think you should have said Salam before me?” he said tauntingly.

“Tell me one thing. Where is it written that the person who picks up the call should say Salam first?” He raised a point.

“My son! It’s written in the book of manners and respect. And I believe that instead of going through it, you placed the book under your pillow for a night and then threw it outside.” He remarked sarcastically.

“Yes, right, you were the one who gave me this idea.” He shifted the blame onto him.

“Stop it.” He warned him.

“Don’t give me chances.” He gave his opinion.

“Alright, tell me about the task I assigned you. What did you do about that?” He came straight to the point.

“It’s done. You tell Haroon and he won’t do that work?” He acted high and mighty.

“And he’s not Haroon if he doesn’t shift all the burden onto Arham and sleep tight.” He revealed his secret.

“Wh… What do you mean? Did Ahmar say that?” he mumbled.

“No, I have my sources.” It was new information to him.

“You had someone spy on me? How could you do this to me?” His jaw dropped.

“You grew up in my hands. I know you inside out.” And it was true.

“Yes, you know a bit too much.” He muttered.

“Alright, enroll in the university and report to me in the evening.” He gave the next order.

“Wait a minute. Do I really have to be exhausted all day at the university?” Thinking about spending the whole day, he got annoyed.

“It is not exhaustion; it is your responsibility. And they pay you handsomely for it.” It was a reminder to him.

“As if I’m being paid millions.” He couldn’t stop himself from taunting.

“Right, now listen. Observe the whole situation and whomever you suspect, keep a close eye on them.” Another order.

“Yes, I don’t have two eyes but 10 cameras to fix one on each eye.” He spoke in an irritated tone.

“Don’t speak nonsense. You and I both know that you keep Arham with you. So don’t make these useless excuses and best of luck.” After saying those last words, he hung up the call. While he glared at the black screen of the phone, he threw it on the bed and walked outside.

**********

“Thank goodness you came, Mahi… I don’t know what would have happened if you’d been a little late…” Hearing the bell ring, Sidra quickly opened the door. She let out a sigh of relief seeing Mahi. Sidra was living in a luxurious apartment… In comparison with her apartment, Maheen’s house was smaller. But everyone had the privilege to enjoy their luxuries accordingly.

When Maheen came here for the first time, she felt amazed and wondered how Sidra pulls through alone. While in their house, even if a single person stays out of sight for a while, then the whole place looks deserted… It might be the major difference between their values and lifestyle… For Sidra, it was freedom, but Maheen felt it was suffocation. Still, neither of these worldly things could weaken their bond. Sidra never felt bad visiting Maheen’s place, nor did she have any unpleasant views. This is what genuine friendship looks like. They had their differences, but they never let them come between their friendship.

“What is it? You told me nothing on the phone… Why are you so worried?” Maheen got worried seeing her in this state… They sat on the sofa, facing each other…

“Amar is coming…” Sidra informed her…

“So, what is wrong? He is your cousin and friend, too. You people have always lived together, so why are you feeling uncomfortable now?” Maheen asked based on what she knew…

“Mahi… I can’t tolerate his presence…” She clearly put her feelings into words…

“Why?? He won’t be staying here with you, so why worry so much?” Maheen tried to comfort her.

“He won’t stay here, but he won’t get off my back for 24 hours… I stand him…” Sidra still couldn’t get to the point…

“Are you hiding something, Sidra? Tell me clearly what is wrong…” Maheen understood her way of talking.
“Mother told me he is here for wedding shopping… I have to go out with him even if I am unwilling…” She was still avoiding the main point.

“That’s good, right? By the way, have you seen his bride to be? Wait, a minute… Do you like him? If you say, “Can I talk to your parents about this matter?” Maheen’s attention moved entirely to a new topic…

“No, that’s the problem… I just like him as a cousin and a friend and nothing else. But my mother wants us to get married. She said that they had fixed our marriage since childhood. She kept quiet because of my stubbornness. But now she thinks I shouldn’t stay here alone anymore… I can’t marry him, Mahi…” Sidra’s eyes welled up with tears. She held Mahi’s hands with her trembling hands…

“When did this happen? You are telling me this now…” Maheen felt shocked…

“Mother called me in the morning, so I called you immediately. I don’t know what to do.” She was feeling restless.

“Okay, relax… No need to cry… Everything will be fine… Tell me the reason you don’t want to marry him… Are you forced into this relationship?” Maheen wanted her to be in a better state of mind so that they could talk about the issue.

“He had liked me since childhood..” Sidra left her sentence incomplete.

“And you?” Maheen asked, her eyes questioning.

“I… I love someone else, Mahi…” Sidra answered in despair.

“Who is he?” Maheen asked.

“He… Well, I will tell you at the right time… I have been hiding this from you because I was not sure about my feelings… I thought it was just an attraction, but…” She couldn’t say more. She was afraid of Maheen’s reaction.

“Sidra, just calm down… Everything will be alright… Let him come and you can talk to him directly and freely because he is your best friend first… He will understand you and your feelings. Yes, his love is one-sided, but if he truly loves you, he will put your happiness above everything.” That’s what love looks like. Maheen read it in stories and sometimes felt it too.

“Will he really listen and understand me?” Sidra wanted confirmation.

Certainly, why not? Looking at your current state, he will understand that you’re worried about something. Maheen glanced at her miserable condition.

“Thank you, dear,” Sidra started crying.

“By the way, when did it become a custom to invite someone home and not offer them a cup of tea or a glass of water?” Maheen said, trying to divert her attention…

“Sorry… I will bring it right away…” Sidra felt ashamed.

“With tea, bring something to eat as well…” Maheen called out from behind..

“You can come along..” Sidra called her, and while talking with Maheen she prepared the snacks.
