Chapter Five

“Oye.. oy.. aye, Gulshan! Please hurry. Come here quickly; I feel like I am dying from suffocation. I’m dying from this headache; it feels as if my head is having a heart attack; Ahhhh, mother! What should I do … aye,” Aunty Shakeela, holding her head, was continuously moaning in pain.

“Wha.. what?.. What type of disease is that?? a heart attack in the head?” Tayi, resting her hands on her chin, was thinking about this issue.

“As if Aunt Shakeela wasn’t enough, Tayi had to join her too! I am coming, Aunty..take this Panadol and boiled eggs..you will remember what a generous soul you came across,” Gulshan said playfully, then turned around, only to bang her head hard against the wall. She became flustered and looked up; there he was, staring at her with burning eyes

“I think you have become blind,” Shah Nawaz said aggressively and went away.

“Blind.. huh.. I will make you blind in my love, and you will keep shouting my name everywhere,” she said firmly and entered the kitchen, leaving both her aunties chuckling at the event that occurred just a moment ago.

“Stay blessed and keep smiling.. May God fulfill all your wishes, the way you took such good care of me, may Allah bless you with the best partner in return,” Aunty Shakeela whispered a silent prayer and her prayers were the reason that Gulshan loved taking care of her.

“Shani, have you eaten?” It was the first time in a whole day that she found him in the house, so she asked with full authority.

“Hmm..” Shah Nawaz mumbled while taking a water bottle from the fridge.

“Tayi is already asleep.. then who served the food?” He gave her a puzzled look.

“I had it myself, as always.. and why do you seem so worried about my food?? is everything fine?” He sipped water while keeping his gaze fixed on her face.

“Um.. oh, come on, now why wouldn’t I care? It’s not like I don’t think about my family at all.. whatever it is, you are my cousin, and for how long can one stay away from their own blood relations? In the end one has to live with their blood relations, close to them and forever with them” She moved closer to him as she pronounced the last few words, on the other hand he got lost in her eyes for a moment and then he took a step back but Gulshan’s eyes remained fixed on him, Shah Nawaz seemed perplexed despite himself. If only it were any other moment, Gulshan would have laughed hysterically at his expressions, but this time she wanted her act to entrance him, because it was important for her life.

“hmm.. thank God, you finally realised that we aren’t your enemies,” keeping the water bottle in the fridge, he said in a meaningful tone and left, while she kept smiling.

“Ami, baba..im selected for the Lahore tournament and this time they are paying me more. Now just pray that all my dreams come true,” while entering the lounge with high spirits, he was continuously smiling. Her hand froze as she stirred the pot. Taking a deep breath, she concentrated on cooking but remained distracted by her thoughts.

“What the hell! Why does nothing I do ever go right? So he had to go to Lahore now only? Everything was going according to plan, but now what? Oh, lord! What should I do now?” Gulshan muttered as she took out the dishes.

“Oh, dear! This is such good news; bring some sweets for us before you leave; we will share our happiness with the neighbourhood after you get selected in the international team.” Tayi couldn’t hide her excitement. Gulshan grew furious,” So they are allowing their own son to do whatever he wants to, and me? Just because I’m a girl, and that my dad was rich, my wealth bound them to protect me,” Shani could tell that she was taking her anger out on the dishes, for a moment, he had an illusion that she liked him.

And that she was sad about him leaving for Lahore, a faint blush crept across his face at the thought.

**********

“Oh God, I am so unlucky. I don’t want to do this, Rahila. My fate is so bad that I would never leave this hell in this life. My dream will remain unfulfilled. I am nothing like Shah Nawaz, who will see his dreams fulfilled. Goodness, I am sinning by faking my love for him and getting free with a non-Mehram. Ahhh life forces us to do so many unwanted things.” Gulshan was feeling helpless.

“Look, it’s not like you are doing this happily. Your heart is not in this, and I know it. You know we can even eat haram if our life is at risk because of hunger. And you look at yourself, you are doing this because you have no other way to escape.” She wasn’t processing Rahila’s words right now. Her consciousness was constantly reproaching her.

“You just made him realize your presence, that too within limits. You didn’t cross your limits. I don’t think it’s a sin. Besides, he is your betrothed, and your husband to be.” Rahila was saying many things, but Gulshan got up and closed herself in her room. Rahila sighed and helplessly looked at the closed door.

**********

“You are helpless, Gulshan, helpless, okay, and when one faces a helpless situation, one can even eat haram.” She was thinking about all the things Rahila had said to her.

“Actually, Rahila is not wrong. It’s not like I am doing this because of happiness. And there is a legitimate reason I am doing this. My whole life is at stake. I don’t want to waste my whole life sitting in this house. I want to get out of this swamp by all means.” She was pacing in her room, preparing herself for the future, but first she had to tell Rahila about it.
