Translated by INKY WHISPER

FROM YOU TO LOVE is Nageen Khan’s first story which she wrote in her teenage years. She had no experience of writing a novel which is why sometimes you will find a little immaturity in some characters. But when you read this novel, you’ll feel the essence of love.

FROM YOU TO LOVE tells the story of cousins who live under the same roof. Between them is love, fighting, and bickering, but they love each other equally. But where love exists, there is also jealousy and ego getting in the way.

FROM YOU TO LOVE is also a story about university friends who find solace in each other and share everything with one another, from sorrows to happiness.

Chapter Six

“Zaid…What had happened?” After relaxing her breath in the canteen, Inshal asked Zaid while Maria had gone to the library.

“What’s the hurry, Nisha Api, let Hamza come then you can ask…” before Zaid’s sentence could complete, Hamza sat down with a thud next to Inshal’s chair.

“Hamza, what scene were you making there? A group of people had gathered there. What if somebody started beating you… and what if Raza started beating you then? And how did Sir Adil let you come this easily?.” Inshal wouldn’t stop talking.

“Stop…Stop, let him breathe…” Zaid halted Inshal’s non-stop talking while Hamza was trying not to laugh.

“Man… Raza and Momin got into a fight, then it was a matter of honour for our group, so the matter escalated a bit.” Momin sometimes hung out with Hamza and Hadid and was a class fellow with all of them (Maria, Inshal, Hadid and Hamza) while Raza was from the arts department.

“Anyway, I gotta go, I have a class.” Zaid was their junior, so he got up to take his class.

“You shouldn’t have ‌jumped into other people’s business.” Inshal had no patience left for him.

“Anyway, I am quite hungry. I will eat biryani. What will you eat?”

“You are forever hungry…. By the way, I’ll also eat biryani.” Inshal taunted him but still asked for biryani. Her mouth watered at the mention of biryani.

“Huh, greedy woman,” Hamza ran towards the counter while Inshal just looked at him.

Hamza came back with two plates of biryani and a can of Sprite. They eat in silence.

“Nisha dear… the lunch was amazing… madam will pay the bill.” The first part was for Inshal and the second for the child working in the cafe. Hamza then walked out proudly from the cafe as if he had done something big.

And Inshal once again looked at Hamza’s back foolishly.

**********

“Well, Well come on in, it’s your own house.” Imar’s sarcastic tone welcomed Inshal, Hamza, and Zaid into the house. So Sir Adil had recounted the entire incident with extra spice added to it.

“Assalamualaikum!” Inshal and Zaid entered their rooms so that they could enjoy the free film about to take place.

“Hamza, what on earth have you been doing? I am telling you, if you get suspended again, then I’ll drag you to the office with me,” Imar said in a hard tone and left because he was already tired. Inshal stomped off in frustration because Hamza barely got scolded.

“Ohhhh, it was Imar Bhai, right?” Hamza acted to faint while asking Zaid who, with a sour expression, walked towards the kitchen.

“What happened to him?” Ayesha Begum asked when she saw Zaid in a bad mood.

“Oh, leave him, let’s go; I’ll tell you about my performance today.” Hamza said by taking Ayesha Begum towards the garden because all the three brothers had more friendship with Ayesha Begum than with Saima Begum.

**********

“Chachi Jaan (Uncle’s wife) , you have made a wonderful biryani.”

“Jazakallah (May Allah reward you) beta, eat more,” Ayesha Begum lit up at Hamza’s praise, while Saima Begum made a face.

Tomorrow Bani Dadi was leaving, so Ayesha and Saima Begum had made a lot of dishes so everyone was at the table.

“Hamza, beta, also eat these meatballs.” Saima Begum reluctantly composed herself.

“No, Mama, those are not to my taste today. I like biryani more.” Hamza said happily.

“Give it to me, Mama.” Zaid took the bowl of meatballs from her, and to hide her smile, Inshal put the glass of water to her mouth.

“Why are you both calling me mama… call me Amma…are you the descendants of the British?” Saima Begum said sarcastically.

“Ayesha, you are coming with me tomorrow, right?” Bani Dadi tried to change the subject.

“Oh yes, yes,” because of Bani Dadi’s age and her arthritis, she couldn’t travel alone, so the doctors had suggested that somebody have to accompany her.

They ate in a pleasant environment, and after the meal, everybody got busy with their work. Nobody felt the sudden seriousness of Ayesha Begum’s behaviour, but only Inshal felt it because she was her daughter, her own blood. Compared to sons, daughters are more sensitive towards their mother but Inshal thought it was her migraine, as Ayesha Begum had a migraine.

**********

“Mama, is it really necessary for you to go?” Inshal helped her mother in packing, but she was clearly sad.

“Oh… yes, but every time me or Bhabi (sister-in-law) go with your Bani Dadi Beta,” Ayesha Begum replied.

“Yeah, so Tai Jaan (Uncle’s Wife) should go this time…. I don’t want you to go. I am feeling uneasy about it.” Inshal lovingly put her head in Ayesha Begum’s lap.

“Nisha, can I tell you something, beta?” After a moment of silence, Ayesha Begum said lovingly, running her fingers through Inshal’s hair.

“Yes, Mama, please.”

“Nisha, I know your Tai Jaan does not like you…. but Beta, she doesn’t bother you or nag you about anything, so promise me something….” Ayesha Begum sighed and said after a few moments.

“Promise me that whatever happens you won’t leave the hand of patience because Allah is with the patient people, and if Allah is with you, then you will not need the company of any other…. Promise me you won’t fight with Hamza over small things…and promise me you won’t change your personality….” Inshal cut off Ayesha Begum.

“What are you talking mama.. I’ll promise something good, like when I become independent, then we’ll travel to my favorite places and…..”

“Nisha, please, beta… you are all grown up now… it’s not good to joke all the time.” Inshal looked closely at Ayesha Begum. Today she looked more exhausted and more serious than ever, as if she carried the fatigue of a lifetime. Inshal also got serious and held both of Ayesha Begum’s hands in her own.

“What happened, Mama? You’re a bit too serious today? Has Tai Jaan said something to you? If there is something you can share with me?” Inshal expressed her concerns.

“No, what would Saima Bhabi say, anyway? It’s just that I am worried about you. I don’t want you to feel lonely after me, my dear… That’s why, don’t let anybody raise their fingers at my upbringing…. You are all I have. Whatever happens, don’t leave the hands of patience. Always trust Allah.”

“Mama, I think your migraine is a little worse today, so take your medicine and take rest.. we’ll talk about this in the morning.” Inshal gave medicine to Ayesha Begum, and when she lay down, Inshal came out of her room towards the kitchen.
